The Tunnels to Towers 5k series was founded in memory of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers to assist in emergency response there. On Saturday, August 12th, the Willamette Valley Tunnels to Towers 5k will take place at Mount Angel’s Fire Station. The course will be challenging, but participants of all speeds and abilities are encouraged to participate. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome on the course, so is firefighter turnout gear and military attire and backpacks. All other personal items should be kept in the car, as there is no gear check available.
The race starts at Mount Angel Fire Station on Monroe street. The course takes runners along College St up to the Abbey, and back again through neighborhoods to end near the Glockenspiel Restaurant. The race is chip-timed, and you will receive an event t-shirt. Additionally, you can choose to be a fundraiser for the T2T Foundation, and there are fundraising incentives for that.
About the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.
The goal of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting our nation’s first responders and service members. Building for America’s Bravest, a proud program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, constructs specially adapted smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. In January 2015, the Foundation also raised over one million dollars to fully pay off the mortgages for the families of slain NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Luis Ramos.
