One of the deepest and most competitive public 5Ks returns to the Nike campus near Beaverton on Saturday evening, July 29th. The Bowerman Track Club 5K brings together a wide assortment of runners, from the fastest Nike athletes to local runners who come simply for the novelty of the rare chance to run at Nike World Headquarters.
The winning times are usually eye-poppingly fast, but don’t be intimidated. Runners of all paces are welcome to toe the line, and young kids and walkers with strollers are encouraged to attend. The course is fast and relatively flat, with just one noticeable hill, and tours the Nike World Headquarters campus on paved roads and the adjacent woods on a fine gravel path.
The event is a fundraiser for the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund (AUCF), “an organization focused on providing improved healthcare, education and exposure to sport in Uganda communities,” founded by Julius Achon. Last’s year race raised over $4000 for the fund.
The fast field can be partly attributed to the prize money awarded to the top overall and masters (40 and over) male and female finishers: $300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, $100 for 3rd, and $100 for 1st master. Age group winners will earn Bowerman Track Club apparel, and all runners who stay for the awards ceremony are eligible to win raffle prizes.
Food is available after the race, but when I last ran the race a couple years ago, the post-race repast was not included in the entry fee, so you may want to bring your wallet. And since it’s an evening race, you will probably be pretty hungry (in 2015, it was my third race of the day, so I was famished, and chagrined to have left my wallet in the car). Note to Nike: Take pity on us, and offer some token refreshments for free!
