If you’ve been too busy this to commit to a lot of milage in your summer race schedule, maybe the Bend Classic Mile on the evening of July 22nd is just what you need. Short and sweet, Bend’s only downtown mile takes place in the 15 minutes between the Cascade Cycling Classic Pro 1-2 Women and Pro 1 Men Twilight Crits. This will ensure that there is plenty of excitement and lots of cheering by the 14,000 spectators.
The course is USATF-sanctioned and loops around Bend on Bond, Greenwood, Wall, Idaho, and Georgia streets. You can view the course map here. The pre-start corral will be on the east side of Wall Street on the grass field across from the Library. Please be aware that due to the bike crits, traffic and parking will be a bit tricky, so please plan to arrive early so you can find a place to park and get to the start by 6PM without interrupting the race. Carpooling is recommended, so bring a friend or two to race with and ride together!
There will be a VIP area along the block in front of FootZone and your race bib gets you entry to this. You will also receive a wristband for one guest entry and it’s a great location for people to watch the crits and mile. There will also be snacks available here.
The one catch with this race is that you must be able to complete the mile in under a 9 minute pace. There is a very limited time on the roads for this race between bike races, so race officials will be on hand to direct folks off the course who have not been able to achieve the time limit pace. However, if you are blessed enough to be one of the super fast elite runners, (both adults and high schoolers,) there is an elite registration available for you folks as well.
This may be a short race, but there’s a nice prize purse courtesy of Hoka One One six runners deep for men and women which ranges from $100 to $1000 depending on how fast your feet will carry you.
