Oregon Fall Marathons and Half Marathons: November 2017 Edition

There’s been some talk lately of the Portland Marathon and Half Marathon potentially having to change their course or even cancel their 2017 race. Whether or not that happens – and we hope it doesn’t – it’s always good to know about other marathons and half marathons running around the same time so you can see your options.

This is the second of three posts giving you some options for fall half and full marathons. For these posts, we’re defining “Fall” as September, October, and November. This post is for November races only. Please keep in mind that this list is based on the Pacific NW Running Calendar, so you should check there for updates after this post’s original publication date. The area includes Oregon, Southern Washington, and the Seattle Metro. All locations are Oregon unless otherwise noted. We’re including races that are half and full marathons, and those that offer a similar distance. Know of more we should add? Click on “Contact us” and drop us a line.

Half Marathons:

Happy Girls Run – Sat, Nov 4 in Sisters: I ran this one year – maybe the first year? – with a group of girlfriends and we made a fun weekend out of it. The race is slightly different now; it’s course is now a point-to-point that runs on the Peterson Ridge Trail. Capped at 500 participants, the half is currently $75.

Klickitat Trail Run – Sat, Nov 4 in Klickitat, Wash. (Columbia River Gorge): This is a GREAT race put on by volunteer race directors to raise funds local nonprofits. I ran it one year and ran one of my slowest half marathon times, but I had such a great time at this challenging trail run. And it’s only $33 if you sign up by October 31.

Silver Falls Marathon – Sun, Nov 5 at Silver Falls State Park. This is a challenging race put on by some friends of Run Oregon’s with an amazing course showcasing the waterfalls at Silver Falls State Park. Be ready for mud, hills, and maybe even a giant staircase – but more importantly, be ready on August 1 when registration opens at 8a because this race sells out in hours. Registration price isn’t posted yet but this is a fairly low-cost event.

Bend Ale Run Half Marathon – Sat, Nov 11 in Bend. The race finishes at the Bend Ale Festival, but the race itself is brand-new. The organizers, Breakaway Promotions, have put on a number of other events including the Bridge of the Gods Run, the Columbia Gorge Marathon, and a number of competitive cycling events. Registration is currently $70.

Veteran’s Day Half Marathon – Sat, Nov 11 in West Linn (point-to-point race starting in Wilsonville): Hosted by the folks at the Hood to Coast Series, this is billed as a “cross country style race” which means it’s not just more pavement pounding. $10 of every registration will go towards a Military Museum Project, and the course at Sandelie Golf Course will be festooned with American flags. Registration is $50 through October 1.

Ghost of Seattle Half Marathon – Sat, Nov 25 in Seattle: I ran this half last year and had a great time. This is a very low-key race that consists of out-and-backs (2 for the half) with surprisingly little elevation gain/loss. This race attracts friendly runners, in my experiences. Registration will open on July 19 at 8a.

Seattle Half Marathon – Sun, Nov 26 in Seattle: As long as you dress for the weather, this is a race to put on your bucket list. After the race, participants get to recover indoors with an impressive spread. The course is not what you’d call pancake-flat, but the race attracts a fair number of competitive runners. The half is $115 thru October 15.

Close to Half Marathon Distance:

Autumn Trails 16-miler – Sun, Nov 3 in Eugene. 16 miles is the longest of 4 race distances offered at this event organized by Level 32 racing. The registration is only $30.

I Like Pie 12-miler – Thurs, Nov 23 in Bend. The clever name of this race hints at the race’s goal: to raise funds for Neighbor Impact. Participants are invited to print a pie to share after the race, along with 5 lb of food for this community food pantry. Registration is a suggested donation of $12; this is not a race but rather a community group run/walk.

Marathon:

Klickitat Trail Run – Sat, Nov 4 in Klickitat, Wash. (Columbia River Gorge): This marathon is only $63! What a great deal! I’ve only run the half, but can vouch for the organizers that they put on a lovely event. It’s not an easy, or fast, race, but it’s beautiful.

Silver Falls Marathon – Sat, Nov 4 at Silver Falls State Park.

Lithia Loop Trail Marathon – Sat, Nov 4 in Ashland.  Togue Valley Runners organizes this trail marathon that gains 7,200 feet of elevation over the distance. (There are 2 miles of asphalt, FYI.) This is just a marathon but it’s run like an ultra with only 6 well-stocked aid stations on course. Registration wasn’t open at the time this post was written, but should be open soon.

Ghost of Seattle Marathon – Sat, Nov 25 in Seattle: This is a very low-key race that consists of out-and-backs (2 for the full, but then you do them both again) with surprisingly little elevation gain/loss. All those out and back segments might sound boring, the the course is through trail, along Lake Washington, and through some really nice residential areas. Registration will open on July 19 at 8a.

Seattle Marathon – Sun, Nov 26 in Seattle: The Seattle Marathon is a good race that any marathoner in the NW should run at some point. It’s a well-organized event with an excellent indoor post-race recovery area. It’s not a cheap race, though, at $145.

50k:

Silver Falls Marathon – Sat, Nov 4 – 50k – at Silver Falls State Park.

About Kelly Barten (790 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.

Battle to the Pacific at Fort Stevens is Nov. 12, 2017. It’s a wonderful (paved) trail half marathon! Also a 10k & 5k. It’s only $45.
