Run Oregon Test Kitchen: Sampling MODe Sports Nutrition at Hood to Coast Washington

Untitled

MODe with team Run Oregon at the inaugural Hood to Coast Washington

We are not supreme health nuts here at Run Oregon. I will be the first to admit that Ice Cream is my fatal flaw, and I know that the super-speedy Joe Dudman is a Funyuns afficianado. I have also seen him chow dowan at the Cheesecake Factory and wonder how in the heck he can stay in such amazing running shape (I’m jealous). That being said, we do understand that these non-healthy options should be utilized sparingly and we love checking out new nutrition items that will keep us on the right track.

MODe Sports Nutrition currently offers three cold-pressed juice beverage products. A pre-workout booster to increase endurance and power, an intra-workout shot to prevent cramping and increase energy levels, and a post-workout booster that decreases inflammation and speeds up the rate of recovery.

  • Beet+Berries (Pre-Workout)
  • Mango+Ginger (Inter-Workout)
  • Cucumber+Lime (Post-Workout)

Here is how MODe came to be:

The idea for MODe’s line of products began to take shape when Walter started cycling competitively. While he took his coach’s recommendation for whole, natural nutrition as a fuel source to heart, he found it was nearly impossible to plan and prepare food that met all of his nutritional needs while also balancing work, training, and family time. What he was looking for was an easy way to consume what was needed, but in a hassle-free way.

We took MODe on the road for team Run Oregon on Hood to Coast Washington. While we would normally be OK with chowing down on Funyuns or candy bars during relays, we thought we would be smart and add some nutrition to our cooler. It only made sense to have a pre-workout, recovery, and anti-cramping boosters at our disposal.

During relays, everything is operating in hyper drive and you are just sort of winging things as the day progresses. While nutrition usually starts with good intentions, it can slowly start to diminish as you are 6-8 hours in and just need something in your stomach while you are going loopy. I remember pulling out the bottles, looking at the thick and colorful liquid and not being sure that I could handle it. After all, I had seen enough in the port-a-potties already that I was concerned that I would end up in there more if these didn’t sit right with my stomach.

I needn’t have worried as the texture (surprisingly smooth) and flavors (FAR exceeded expectations) both sat with me. From first glance, I expected the taste to be too strong and too much going on, but each of the flavors could be distinctly found in the bottles and none seemed annoyingly overpowering. Just goes to show you to not judge a book (bottle) by its cover. The Beet and Berries did stain my teeth and lips red for a bit, so you may want to have a cleanser handy if you are going to be going back to work or play after you run.

We plan on trying these during a single run, as opposed to on a 12-hour relay, as it was more of a challenge to weigh the health effects when you are just so bloody tired and drained from running and driving. Overall, we were genuinely impressed. The flavors are definitely unique, but were definitely a welcome shake-up from the standard sports drink. We also really enjoyed the nutrition benefits that it provided and it felt more pure and natural than many powders and bars that claim to be. The price is a tad steep at $55/case (case = 6 8-ounces, 10 2-ounces, or a combo), but you are getting some high quality and good-for-you bevarages, as well as free, overnight, and cold-packed shipping.
