There are a few weekends throughout the year where there is a great number of races to choose from. July 4th (and the nearest weekend) is one of those days. Run With Paula’s Independence Day 5k/10k takes place in beautiful Champoeg State Park in St Paul on Tuesday, July 4th, at 8am.
The race starts and ends near the Riverside Pavillion on the west end of the park (turn left after passing the pay station at the entrance of the park). There is plenty of parking near the start, but it’s always a good idea to carpool if you can. (Oregon State Parks also charges a $5 day use parking fee, or you can use your annual access pass.) The courses for both distances are out-and-back, run mostly on paved walking/biking paths within the State Park. The 5k turnaround point is shortly after passing the entrance to the campground, while the 10k keeps heading eastward on the shaded path with rolling hills. Due to the nature of the course, unfortunately no strollers, baby joggers, or pets are allowed on the course.
After the race, there’ll be a BBQ with burgers (beef or veggie; you choose during registration), beer and non-alcoholic drinks. The awards ceremony will start at 10am, where awards will be given to overall winners, and age group ribbons are awarded three deep in each category. There will be prize drawings for shoes and gift cards. The park has a lot of activities to offer, so make a day of it and enjoy the outdoors!
