Preview: Tilikum Trail Run offers 4th of July Trails & Family Outdoor Fun

Last year, I ran in the Tilikum Trail 5k; it is a challenging race but one that has such a beautiful variety of wooded trails, grassy paths, and only a few nasty hills, that if I were going to be in town again this year I’d pack the family up and head to Newberg for the 2017 race.

This cool event, held at Camp Tilikum, raises funds to help send youth to camp, where they can enjoy canoeing, swimming, hiking, and other activities that probably take you back to your days of summer camp. If you sign up before June 16th, the registration is only $35 including a t-shirt; after that the registration goes up to $45 without the shirt. Kids 6-17 pay only $15 and ages 5 and under can participate at no cost.

The event includes a 5k competitive run, a 5k fun run, and a 1 mile walk. There’s also a BBQ lunch available afterwards for just $5, or you can bring your own picnic and stay to enjoy the camp activities mentioned above, plus the “big swing,” the treehouse, and visiting the barn to see the animals. (My kids loved that part.) For elementary-age kids, I recommend planning to stay for the family Scavenger Hunt, which will get your kids looking around at nature instead of down at a screen.
