Race Preview: 2017 Pacific Crest Sports Festival

In 2008, I went on a girl’s weekend to Sun River for the Pacific Crest Half Marathon. It was in the 90’s that weekend with no shade in sight, I was getting over the stomach flu, and the elevation change made it hard to breathe, but it was among one of my favorite races. It was challenging but beautiful and I can think of worse places to relax after a race than Sun River and the neighboring region of Bend.

This year, the Pacific Crest Sports Festival is on the weekend of June 23th through the 25th. If you don’t know anything about this event, there’s something in it for every athlete looking for a challenge. It’s also a great place for the family if you are looking for a weekend away.

On Friday June 23th, the Pac Crest festival begins with the 25k Trail Run starting at 7:00AM sharp. This is a gorgeous point-to-point course which begins at Wanoga Snow Park and finishes on a paved path at a multi-sports finish line.

Also that Friday, the Tour de Crest bike tours begin at 7:30AM. These are non-competitive 26 and 55 mile bike rides that offer stunning views along the Long Course and Olympic Distance triathlon bike courses. They are also family friendly with very little traffic and a well-maintained, moderate course. Even better, it’s a supported event, so there will be water, energy drinks, fruit, and energy bars along the course. There’s even a post-race meal for everyone to enjoy!

Yet another event taking place on the 23th is the Kid’s Splash Pedal-n-Dash at 4:00PM. This is for all youth 12 and under and it’s a very popular event with over 500 kids racing across the same finish line as the adults cross after their races.

Saturday June 24th, the sweat sessions continue with the Marathon and Half Marathon beginning at 7:00AM. The course for these circle the Sunriver Resort on a scenic paved path through greenery and past golf courses and summer homes. The course has minimal elevation gain and a fast downhill and flat finish at the Sunriver Village Mall where all participants will finish to the cheers from their peers.

Also on that Saturday, the Long Course Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike will begin at 8:00AM. The Pacific Crest Long Course has become a destination race for athletes near and far, so we are fortunate to have this experience so near our backyards here in Oregon. This is a challenging race, but one worth pursuing! It’s an experience you’ll surely never forget. Choose your adventure here: The Tri is a 1.2 mile swim, a 58 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. The Du is a 58 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run. The AquaBike is a 1.2 mile swim and a 58 mile bike ride. By the way, the Long Course Triathlon offers a prize purse to the top 5 overall males and females of almost $5000. Not too shabby!!

Sunday June 25th certainly isn’t a day of rest in Sun River either. The Olympic Distance and Ultra-Distance Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike events all start at 8:00AM. The Olympic Distance races are half the distance of the Long Course races but they will still challenge you as well as give you the breathtaking scenery. The Tri is a 1.5k swim, a 28 mile bike ride, and a 10k run. The Du is a 28 mile bike ride and a 10k run. The AquaBike is a 1.5k swim and a 28 mile bike ride. The Ultra-Sprint Distance will offer you shorter options for the swim and run, but will again keep you sweating while maintaining the bike distance. The Tri is a ½ mile swim, a 28 mile bike ride, and a 5k run. The Du is a 28 mile bike ride and a 5k run. The AquaBike is a ½ mile swim and a 28 mile bike ride. The perfect mid-distance!!

Additionally on Sunday, the 5k and 10k Run/Walk begin at 8:30AM and 8:45AM respectively with the same scenic views promised for the longer distances the day before. There are also Kids Dashes (1 Mile and ½ Mile) beginning at 8:00AM on this date, which are fun and non-competitive. Get your kid hooked on fitness while they are still young!

After all the fun of all the sporting events listed above, there will be time for all to celebrate. There will be live entertainment provided by Hit Machine, a Deschutes Brewery Beer & Food Garden and a fun Sports & Fitness Expo. There will be an awesome kids area with Jump Houses, Rock-Climbing, Mini Gold, Bumper Cars and more. Also, if you are one of the crazy amazing people who can’t stop at just one event, there are special “BEAST Medals” for all the participants who double or triple the racing at Pac Crest. You’ll get your medal at the awards ceremony while you enjoy the post-race entertainment.

So bring the whole family, because there is truly something for everyone this weekend!
