Two things that will make a race interesting to me are a good reason/cause and a unique location. The ORRC Summer Solstice Sundowner 5k gives you both: This race on the evening of Thursday, June 22nd celebrates the Summer Solstice (which actually happens two days before the race), and the course for the race is entirely on the grounds of the Oregon Zoo, taking you past the Elephant Lands, African Rainforest, Pacific Shores and the Primate Forest. The loop is 1.25k long, and 5k participants run four laps.
If you have visited the zoo before, you know that there will be some hills. The course will take you near stairs, but at no point are stairs the correct way to go, but instead the course will choose ramps, which at one point will take you through the otter and sea lion caves.
After the race, the concert lawn is open for picnic and post-run mingling. The Forest Hall at Elephant Lands exhibit, as well as the Elephant Ears Cart, Grilled Cheese Cart and Black Rhino Hut will have extended hours as well.
