The Newport Marathon has a little bit of everything with ocean views, a well supported course and Oyster Shooters. You read that right, there are Oyster Shooters at miles 11 and 19 for those brave enough to partake. Beginning at the historic ‘haunted’ lighthouse in Yaquina Bay State Park, the course takes you along our beautiful Pacific ocean, through some coastal neighborhoods, around Yaquina Bay and through the town of Newport. It’s mostly flat, with a few rollers making it a perfect first time marathon or great option for anyone looking to qualify for Boston since the course is USATF certified.
The Marathon begins at 7am on June 3rd and the Half Marathon begins at 7:45am. Walkers get an extra early start at 6am. The Marathon costs $110, the Half Marathon costs $85 and registration is only available through May 31st. There will be aid stations about every two miles with CLIF SHOTS Electrolyte Hydration Drink and water as well as port-a-potties. The finish line will offer plenty of post-race food and showers are available at Newport High School from 10am-1pm for $2. Awards will take place at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club at 2:30pm. The first open male and female and first female and male masters finishers will receive an award, plus the top three finishers in each age division. All finishers receive a race shirt and finisher’s medal. Not your typical bling, Newport Marathon is known for their medals. They are small pieces of art, are always very unique and have actually won awards for their creativity.
This is a weekend event, so plan accordingly and book a campsite or reserve a hotel room. Athletes must pick up their race packet between 3pm and 9pm on Friday, June 2nd at the Embarcadero Resort Hotel. There will be a pre-race pasta dinner from 5:30pm-8pm on Friday at the American Legion in Newport. Tickets are $10 and include pasta, salad, bread, dessert and soda. Directions and tickets will be available at packet pick-up.
Newport is a quaint little coastal town and prides itself as being ‘The Friendliest’ one at that. It’s quiet and peaceful with just enough amenities to make your stay comfortable. There’s plenty to do in Newport, but you won’t feel the rush of the city. It’s a beautiful spot for a marathon and a great weekend getaway.
