When I was a little girl, I dreaded running a mile in gym class. I embraced running just before I turned 30 and I really wish I had caught the running bug earlier in life. So when I had a chance to race with a young girl for the Girls On The Run organization last year, I was eager to see running through a child’s eyes with excitement and encouragement. It was an amazing experience for me and if you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in a young girl’s life, this is your chance. I am participating as a running buddy again this year in Portland. But if you are a woman in the Corvallis area on June 3rd, I strongly encourage you to sign up for the Girls on the Run Willamette Valley 5k.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a 12-week empowerment program that teaches girls from 3rd to 8th grade the skills to run their very first race in a healthy and joyful way with confidence in a non-competitive environment. If you choose to register as a Running Buddy, you will get to run with one of these girls and inspire and encourage her the entire way. I can’t even tell you how rewarding it is to get to be a part of this huge moment in a young girl’s life.
This race will take place along the gorgeous OSU campus. Even better, it’s open to the community and 100% of the proceeds go back into the funding for the GOTR organization, which makes the program affordable to girls regardless of their family’s income.
If you decide you’d rather run the race on your own rather than as a Running Buddy, you can enter the race as a Community Runner. Or you could form a Community Runner Team (you’ll receive a $5 discount for registering as a team) which can be any age, gender, or size. There are several team categories which include Most Spirited Attire, Largest team, and Fastest First Four Finishers.
Running buddies should plan on arriving at the race location at 9:00AM for some pre-race activities. The girls will arrive around 9:15AM for some team spirit events and this is a great chance to get to know them and get them pumped up for their race. The race will start at 10:00AM and you must stay with your girl through the whole distance. At 11:30, there will be the community team awards and it’s time to celebrate.
Give this race a try if you haven’t yet! I promise you won’t regret it.
