Small Race Preview: For the Kids 5k Walk/Run &amp (Newberg); SaxEn Scholarship 5k and 800m (Salem)

Get the whole family’s running shoes tied and head to Newberg on June 3rd for the family-friendly For The Kids 5k Walk/Run.

This event will support the Royal Family Kids Camp and Teen Reach Adventure Camp of Yamhill County. Foster kids ages 7-15 deserve to get the same summer camp experience as the rest of kids, and the funding for this organization will allow that to happen.

As parents, so many of us are looking for exposure to healthy lifestyles for our kids and this race which winds throughout the Newberg neighborhoods is a great excuse to get everyone moving in a non-competitive environment.

The course begins at the Mountainview Road entrance of Newberg Christian Church and participants will take a cruise through the neighborhoods of Newberg and the George Fox University campus before coming back up Meridian and past Joan Austin Elementary and finally ending back on Mountainview Road.

Pets, bikes, scooters, and skateboards will not be permitted, but strollers are welcome, so bring the little ones!

If you are closer to Salem than Newberg but still want a fun and healthy event suitable for the whole family, there’s another option for Saturday, June 3rd. Come and join the party for the SaxEn Scholarship 5k (and Children’s 800m.) Coach Saxe is retiring from 35 years of teaching and coaching at South Salem High School and he wants to celebrate with all of you! All community members, students, and athletes past and present are warmly invited to come to this fun event.

The Matson-Shannon 5k starts at “traditional Saxon Invite” start time of 10:00AM and will be run on the (also traditional) Bush Park course, which was once the site of the State Cross Country meet where, in separate years, Mike Shannon and Jefff Matson each took 2nd place many years ago. All ages are welcome to this race!

For the kids this year, consider the Pankey 800 which is designated for children under the age of 10 and is named for Gracey Pankey who won the 800m distance at the State Track and Field meet in the 90’s. This race will follow a grass loop around the lower field at Bush Park and the top finishers will receive mason jars filled with candy.

If running isn’t your thing, there is a 1.5 mile walk option as well on the Kelsy Oldham Loop. You’ll start at the traditional start line and walk past the tennis courts to the Kelsy Oldham Loop and then onto the traditional finish line. The top 10 finishers of the walk will be given some goodies from Great Harvest.

After the race, stick around for awhile. Dave Pluister, the South Salem art teacher, is creating unique glassware for the top 10 men and women finishers in each race, and did I mention a catered BBQ? Adams Ribs will be on hand to feed you after your race. The cost of the BBQ is $5 (proceeds go toward two scholarships for SSHS and to the WVRR Kelsey Oolham Scholarship) and there will be pulled pork and brisket sandwiches and 3 sides. This feast is limited to the first 150 registrants, so hurry, as pre-registration is required.
