Race Preview: 2017 Run to Remember (Washougal, WA)

Finisher’s medal

For many people, Memorial Day is just a lovely three-day-weekend that signals the beginning of summer. Memorial Day is a day to remember the members of the Armed Forces who have died while or as a result of performing their duties, and Why Racing’s Run to Remember reminds us of just that. The race course is line with flags and with pictures of fallen soldiers, sailor, and Marines. The race is partnering with Northwest Battle Buddies, an organization that helps service members suffering from PTSD by matching them with a service dog at no cost.

The race starts and ends in beautiful downtown Washougal. Parking is available in a big parking lot adjacent to the start, and some street parking on the neighboring streets. The morning starts with the 1 mile race at 8am. This one-miler is not just a kids race, it’s a great way to test the speed of your street mile! After that, the 5k and 10k start together at 9am.

The courses for all races start by heading south from the start line near Main St and Pendleton Way, then head west on the Columbia Trail to their respective turnaround points. The trail is not paved but has a packed dirt and gravel surface, and during the run you’ll have beautiful views of the Columbia, Captain William Clark Park, Steigerwald Lake Wildlife Refuge, and – on a clear day – Mount Hood! The 5k will have two water stations, while the 10k will have four. Strollers are welcome on the course (please start from the back of the pack), but please leave your four legged friend at home, unless he/she is a service dog.

After the race, stick around for the celebration, brunch buffet for all finishers, and music. Awards will be given to top finishers three deep overall, masters and in age groups. Last year’s swag bag also included a discount coupon to the Pendleton Woolen Mills store (located right next to the start/finish), so be sure to bring that along for some shopping before heading home.
