Race Preview: 2017 Starlight Run 5k

Nearing 40 years of existence (39 to be exact), the Starlight Run has been a non-timed, costume-heavy run through the downtown city streets of Portland. Thousands of runners take to the pavement ahead of the Rose Festival Parade each year and get to experience the thrill of being cheered on by thousands and thousands of spectators along the way. It is a pretty simple, straightforward, and inexpensive event that has thrilled runners and parade-goes alike for quite a while.

Three Run Oregon bloggers were out there last year and had this to say:

This crazy race is a fun, family-friendly event full of quirky and some very well thought out costumes.  Arrive early to cheer on the creative spirit at the costume contest and enjoy plenty of samples from vendor booths, live music or just kicking back with your friends.

This is a fun run and we put a lot of fun into it.  I think this will be our family’s tradition to welcome in the summer season…

This is a great event to enjoy with family and friends at a relaxed pace and soak up the atmosphere.

The race starting and finishing area is on the track and football/soccer field at Lincoln High School. There is plenty of room to space out, stretch, and relax, as well as check out a variety of different venders as well.

As seen above, the course has a variety of turns and runs on some roads that just aren’t super accessible for races any more. Last year saw temperatures near 100 degrees, but that didn’t stop people from coming out to run and watch. I will mention that it’s probably a good idea to plan on packing your own hydration because there are none available along the course (thought there will be Red Bull and other beverages pre-and post-race).

Alongside the Run Like Hell Halloween race, the Starlight Run is one of the most costume-laden races in the state. The theme this year is “Brilliant” and there will be a costume contest for those who are showcasing the best of the best. There are even some great prizes – like airfare on Alaska Airlines! Additionally, there will be a live DJ (Chad Dowling Productions) that will be spinning tracks before and after the run.

Follow the race on Facebook for the latest and greatest info – like this little nugget:

  • The first 500 people to register between May 1-14 will receive a Starlight Logo Buff
