The weekend of May 6th and 7th features three races between the cities of Seaside and Newport. If you are looking to make the most of your Cinco de Mayo “holiday”, consider heading to the coast!
The Newport Cinco de Mayo is back after a 2 year hiatus and features a 10k and a 5k. Both races start and finish at the Rogue Brewery and will circle around some of the best that Newport has to offer (NOAA, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Rogue Brewery, Yaquina Bay Bridge, South Jetty Rd, Oregon Coast Aquarium and Idaho Point).
Have you ever heard of the Loyalty Days in Newport? Here’s a little back story:
Loyalty Day was originated by the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) on the East Coast, with Newport’s Veterans starting our local Loyalty Day celebration in May of 1956. As the celebration continued to spread throughout the nation, Congress wrote a Joint Resolution and President Eisenhower signed the Bill into law designating the First of May as Loyalty Day, a special day set aside for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom. With Newport’s strong support of the Loyalty Day tradition and its designation as a Coast Guard City USA, we invite you to share in this years celebration.
Enjoy the Davis Show Carnival in South Beach all weekend long. The Loyalty Days Parade takes place Saturday at noon in the center of town. The Newport Vietnam Memorial Walk is held Friday evening.
The Newport Loyalty Days Parade Run is a 2-mile race that takes place just prior to the parade. Since Highway 101 will be temporarily closed off for the parade, runners will get to experience safely running on this iconic stretch. Since the event is a point-to-point, busses will transport participants to the starting line from the Performing Arts Center.
The event supports Lincoln County youth track athletes. Every parent and child that enter together and finish the race will get a team silver shoe charm for each of them. All finishers get a ribbon at the finish line as well.
It’s always important to be prepared when you are at the coast. The City of Seaside and Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District are putting on the Seaside Dash to Safety 5k, a race that will take place during as part of the day’s events of safety. Check out the course here.
After the race, the free Seaside Safety Fair will feature a bike rodeo for kids, car seat clinic, fire, ambulance and water safety education, pedestrian safety, a child I.D. clinic as well as information on north coast parenting and poison safety.
