While there’s no guarantee you’ll get good weather for the Spring Classic Duathlon and Home Depot Half Marathon, 10k and 5k races on Sunday, April 23rd , it will definitely be a good way to dust off the cobwebs and get the season started. In its 33rd year, the Spring Classic has been a local favorite for cyclists, triathletes and runners. The course is flat, and fast, not to mention scenic along Marine Drive. Because it’s closed to traffic, this is the perfect event for someone new to cycling. There are no cars to worry about, no stoplights and it’s completely paved. Don’t expect to see just novices out there, Spring Classic also attracts the speedsters. It’s perfect for the beginner, the elite and everyone in between.
The Half Marathon and 10K start the festivities at 7:45am. Taking advantage of Marine Drive and the path along the Columbia River waterfront, the course is smooth and pretty much as flat as you’ll find. The 5K starts at 8:00am. The Duathlon starts at 9:00am and includes a run, bike, run along the Columbia River. Use the 5K Run, 15 Mile Bike and 5K Run as an excuse to get a brick workout in or show up ready to race it. With the river and Mt. Hood in the background, the course is beautiful. Plus, with the out and back course, it’s fun to see other participants the whole way. Everyone will finish near the Home Depot along Airport Way where there will be music, food and vendors. Spring Classic is just that a classic event in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a great opportunity to dust the off your bike and shake up the legs, not to mention a great way to get the season started.
