Race Preview: 2017 Falcon 15K Relay

Classic point-to-point relays are popular for a reason. Whether overnight races like Hood to Coast or the Cascade Lakes Relay, or one-day events like the Gorgeous Relay, they provide a chance for a group of friends to share in the excitement, fun, and camaraderie of a team activity. But there’s a subset of relays that can be even more fun and convenient: Relays with loop courses with all the legs starting and ending at the same location. One of the best of these is the Falcon 15K Relay in Hillsboro, happening this year on Saturday, April 22nd.

The Falcon Relay consists of teams of three with each teammate running one 5k loop. Each leg begins and ends on the Liberty High School track, which provides a great opportunity for spectating and cheering. The race is a fundraiser for Liberty Fit, the high school running and fitness group that encourages students to pursue a healthy lifestyle through a half marathon training program.

The 5k loop takes runners through quiet neighborhood streets.

The 5k loop course is a nice tour of semi-rural roads and quiet industrial park streets, with just enough curves and slight hills to keep it interesting. The tidy loop format is perfect for a relay, plus it easily accommodates individual 15k, 10k, and 5k races, plus a 5k walk. The large open area of the track and football field at the exchange makes it easy for teammates and other friends to mingle and hang out throughout the event. No vans required!

Each loop begins and ends on the Liberty High School track.

With sponsor tents and food vendors (Noodles & Company and Jamba Juice), finishers’ medals, and generous awards in various categories for each race, the Falcon 15K Relay is lots of fun, and a great way to support an excellent training program for kids. There is even a free 300 meter Falcon Flyer Race on the track for kids 10 and under.
