Small Race Previews: Strike out Hunger 5K & 10K Run/Walk and 4J6K Strides for Education (Toledo, Or & Eugene, Or)

As we kick off spring race season, more and more races around the state are popping up on RunOregon’s radar. We LOVE big races, but small races (especially ones that support local causes) are ones we hold dear because there is an added sense of accomplishment when participating. I hope you’ll consider joining other runners and walkers at one of the races below.

The Strike out Hunger 5k/10k run/walk  hosted by the Toledo Food Share Pantry is on April 8th, in Toledo, Or. Nestled along the Yaquina River in Lincoln, County this picturesque coastal town in perfect for a run. Last year the run raised $4,900 for the pantry. That’s pretty impressive since the race had 98 participants.

The pantry operates an independent 501 (c)(3) organization with 3,017 individuals (2,081 adults, 936 youth under 19) that regularly shop at the pantry.  In 2015, the pantry distributed 80,386 pounds of food to families and individuals that reside in Toledo, Elk City, and Sawyers Landing.

While much of the food is donated or purchased at a reduced cost from the Oregon Food Bank, the cost of bread, milk, and especially eggs and meat have gone up dramatically in the last year.  In order to keep up with these price increases, the pantry needs to continue to raise funds so they can continue to offer these essential nutrients to the hungry families in the community.

As a former teacher, anything to do with education is near and dear to my heart. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a school-wide transformation program born of the 1980’s that has had a profound impact on schools nationwide since its inception. The mission statement of AVID is to support college and career readiness for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background. The AVID Strides for Education Eugene 4J 6K Run/Walk will raise funds for the Eugene School District AVID program. This chip-timed race is just $10 for 4J District students and $20 for adults; such a reasonable price that you’ll have plenty left over to donate to a very worthy cause!
