All the basics a runner needs for a relay or vacay: A Run Oregon review of Vacaybox

You only get one vacation  – don’t spend it at the supermarket! Have all the essentials waiting when you arrive.

The above tagline comes from VacayBox, a company that sends you boxes of essentials to your hotel, condo, vacation rental, or even someone’s dorm room. The Vacaybox model is actually structured to service hotels and vacation rental companies by providing all the essentials and luxury commodities a guest could need, waiting when they arrive. However, in speaking with the founder of Vacaybox, I explained how this would be awesome for those runners who are travelling to run and are staying overnight somewhere.

I mean, how awesome would it be to head with a few friends over the Cascades to run in the Bend Marathon this April, and be greeted in your hotel room with a box full of goodies and amenities!? Or maybe you can have a Vacaybox delivered to your vacation rental at the coast for your post-Hood to Coast needs!? It may even be worthwhile to send to a first-time relay runner as encouragement (and providing them with supplies they inevitably forgot). The possibilities are endless when it comes to using this as a runner.

My wife and I recently got back from a weekend trip to Las Vegas for a relative’s wedding and were greeted at the front desk with a VacayBox. Upon taking it up to our room, we pulled out the following:

  • Starbucks Coffee & creamers/sugar
  • Organic Milk
  • Clif & Kind Bars
  • Trail Mix
  • Shaving Cream & Razor
  • Sunscreen
  • Detergent and clothing stain remover
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Garbage bag (an underrated addition!)

This was so amazing! Vegas is already expensive enough as it is, with all its excesses (shows, food, gambling, etc). It was awesome to have a box of stuff in our room that we could snack on without having to plunk down extra cash on some small items. And it was the perfect amount to get us through the few days we were there (would have lasted a shorter period of time if we had brought the kids along).

There are a few different box sizes and it appears that they usually provide everything a group of 4 would need for the first night and morning of a vacation or trip. This allows you to do what you came for – spend time with the people you care about AND get ready for your runs/races. The boxes are:

  • Basic Box (the essentials for the first few days or a week away)
  • Bitty Box (the essentials for a weekend away or a hotel stay)
  • College Box (send a student a care package with the essentials to keep them productive)

Also, this is not a giant nameless company. Each box is handpacked and there are custom offerings available (for those of you who already own and rent out a vacation property or participate in AirBNB).

We were very impressed with VacayBox and have great ideas in mind on where to use these next! The great thing is that you don’t have to do much pre-planning. The turnaround time is about 3 days (if you order by noon), so if you order by Tuesday it should be received by Friday.

Let us know how this would benefit your running schedule this year!
