Finally.
After a few weeks of cold, snow, ice, and general disgust at the use of a treadmill, runners can again join a friendly group for an organized long run this Saturday. Coach Jim’s run returns, but because of recent weather issues, he’s scaled back the mileage slightly so as to avoid overreaching on mileage after what was probably a week or two of less than ideal marathon or half marathon training.
This Saturday’s run will start at 8a out of the Grand Central Bakery at 714 N. Fremont St. in Portland. As usual, please use street parking and NOT the shop’s parking lot (leave it for their regular Saturday customers). Arrive by 7:45a to get organized, use the potty, and find your pace group.
This week’s run is an out-and-back which will turn around after 7 miles; you should head back at your prescribed mileage. The farthest turning point is north of the Fremont Bridge and Cathedral Park, with most of the run offering views of the Willamette River.
Be prepared for rain (obviously) and don’t forget to hydrate even though it’s likely to be wet. At this distance, you should be starting to test out your race-day nutrition plan which may include gels, chews, electrolyte caps, or other quick calories. Not sure what you should try? Ask the experienced pace group leaders what works for them and keep in mind that if your race is during warmer weather, you’ll likely need to prepare for a variety of scenarios.
