BRRR! The Wilson Creek Frozen 50k sure looks like a lot of fun, yet cold and muddy! Luckily this SW Idaho race will heat you up with some warm coffee after you tackle the course. This event actually started out as a run that the race director enjoyed before turning it into this race for everyone to experience the unique winter trail running experience. This course is looped in nature on the Wilson Creek Trail System, with each circle adding to the distance (and the elevation!)
The 50k is made up of a combination of a 10.8 mile loop and a 20.3 mile loop totally of 7,100 feet of elevation gain starting with the 10.8 mile loop and moving onto the 20.3 mile loop. The 20 mile course is actually a 20.3 mile loop and has about 4,900 feet of elevation gain. The 10 mile course is a 10.8 mile loop with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain. The 5 mile course is also a loop and has 788 feet elevation gain.
I personally love a good challenge and the expected cold weather of this race will definitely provide it. There will be no snowman building here, but beautiful views of the Reynolds Creek Gorge and views from the summit of Wilson Peak may make you stop to enjoy nonetheless. Battling, embracing, and conquering the elements – all while getting to experience some of the finest southwest Idaho landscapes – is one epic adventure you are not going to want to miss.
