The Thanksgiving Day race may have been an option that has existed for some time now, but I have only recently discovered it a few years ago. They are fun to attend as many runners go to have fun and jump start their appetite while bringing along their non running family to walk, jog or just spectate. Every time I have attended a race on Thanksgiving it has felt like a huge, fun family gathering and i’m sure that Salem’s Runucopia 5/10/15K is no different. It even has a free 1k for the kids. With a 9 am start time, it doesn’t have to be a really early start to the holiday, but will let you get home in time to start cooking the feast.
The course is a loop, starting and ending at Wallace Marine Park. It is advertised as mostly flat, and I can personally attest that it is a nice part of Salem to run in. The event is chip timed, so there is the option to be competitive if you wish. An awards ceremony will be taking place as well, with accolades for the top finishers while everyone gets to enjoy hot chocolate.
Registration is already open on RunSignUp and is only $16 until November 10th. That price is a steal for a race of any distance. After the 10th it increases to $2o and DOE registration rises to $25. The 1K kids run for those 6 years of age and under is free, just bring them to the registration area on event day to get their bib. The event is stroller friendly, but they ask that you leave your pets at home.
If you have never done a Thanksgiving Day race before, this might be a good one to start with. Nice area, low cost, an area most probably have not raced in. Three distances plus a kids run means it truly has something for everyone. To make it a truly low hassle event, make sure to register early to save money and park on the west side in the park at the event. There will be a lot more space and the footbridge into the main park area is really nice.
