Preview: 2016 Jeff Silbernagel Memorial Run 3k/5k on October 1 in Lyons – free for 18 & younger

Just south of Silver Falls State Park, Lyons is a small town on the Santiam Highway. And each year, they honor the life of Jeff Silbernagel with a race that raises funds to help local residents with medical bills. Silbernagel passed away in 2010 at the too-young age of 38. A local business owner that was well-known and highly regarded, this race is one way his contributions to the community are remembered. The 3k and 5k races are open to both runners and walkers, and you can sign up for either distance for only $15 (that's what we call a great deal). Both distances start and finish at John Neal Park and include paved roads and trail. The website describes the courses: "The 3k course loops through the park along a trail, and then goes through a Lyons neighborhood." The 5k passes by the ponds before hitting the neighborhood.  

It would be easy to Make a Day of It with this race, as well. In addition to hiking at Silver Falls State Park, you’re just a short drive from the Opal Creek Wilderness, the North Santiam State Park, and the Santiam State Forest. Check out this website for a few ideas.
