Race Preview: 2016 MLK Dream Run

MLK Dream The always popular, MLK Dream Run is set to take place Sunday, September 25 in NE Portland. The race honors Dr. Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech and also benefits the NNEBA Fellows, an entrepreneurship program designed to help disadvantaged youth improve and expand skills to procure better employment and higher education opportunities. The MLK Dream Run features a 5k run/walk, a 10k, and a 15k Geoff Hollister Tribute.

The schedule of events on race day are as follows:

6:00am – Gates Open
6:45am – Opening Ceremony
7:00am – 15k
7:10am – 10k
7:20am – 5k
8-11:00am – Awards, prizes, & post race activities

5K-ers will have the chance to move through a diverse area that includes urban scapes weaving through the historic grounds near Jefferson High School and Portland Community College on through past beautiful Peninsula Park connecting to Rosa Parks Blvd moving back to MLK Jr. Blvd and the finish area.

10 &15k-ers get ready for an expansive journey through the Soul of Portland as you hit the streets you will journey through the artistic Alberta Arts communities, beautiful Irvington and Peninsula Parks, past cobbler communities, business nodes quaint neighborhoods like Russell and Stanton, Kerby and Rosa Parks. A special challenge for these two courses will be the steeply winding Mississippi Hill that begins at the bottom of NE Russell and Mississippi and ends at the top of the beginning of the popular shopping area full of unique boutiques.

Each race is chip timed and will include a staggered start. All race participants will receive:

  • Delicious grilled cheese sandwich courtesy of Tillamook Cheese and Dave’s Killer Bread
  • An ice cold Brew courtesy of Widmer Bros Brewing ( for those 21 and older)
  • Raffle tickets issued to all participants for chances to win awesome prizes
  • Swag bag full of wonderful discounts
  • Commemorative T-shirt

A 1st place commemorative MLK Dream Run medal and a Winners certificate courtesy of Huber Timing Company will be given to 1st place in each of the following age brackets:

  • Men’s-Youth – 20 and under
  • Men’s-Open-21-39
  • Men’s-Masters-40-55
  • Men’s- Senior-55 and over
  • Women’s-Youth- 20 and under
  • Women’s-Open-21-39
  • Women’s-Masters-40-55
  • Women- Senior- 55 and over

Registration: Run Sign Up 5k is $40 (ends 9/16); 10k is $55 (ends 9/23); 15k is $65 (ends 9/23)

Packet pick up dates/times/locations are TBD. There will be day of race packet pick up, but participants are strongly encouraged to pick up packets at one of the pre-race day packet pick up events.
