If you’re like me and have retired from the overnight relays or if you’ve thought about trying a relay, but want to test it out on a smaller scale, check out the 4th Annual Gorgeous Relay running on Sunday, September 18th. Less hassle than an overnight relay, teams only need one van and 2-6 runners to tackle the 60 miles from Cascade Locks to Portland. Beginning in waves at Wyeth, just east of Cascade Locks, teams split up the 12 legs and make their way through the Gorge on the Historic Columbia River Highway, continue through Troutdale to the Fairview-Gresham Trial and finish with the Springwater Trail into Portland. Teams celebrate their finish at Base Camp Brewing Company in Portland.
The course includes a little of everything with hills, flats, some trail sections and 60 miles of gorgeous scenery. Running next to the Columbia River and climbing up to the Historic Vista House at Crown Point is just one of the highlights of this event. A course with breathtaking views and historical markers, Gorgeous Relay takes advantage of both. The Historic Columbia River Highway is celebrating its 100th Birthday and I can’t think of a better way to ring in another year than hitting the pavement and reveling in the beauty. I love that this event takes you from a more arid region to the green plush of Portland and all in one day. There are plenty of teams along the way to keep your energy up, but it’s not so crazy crowded like some other popular relays. I feel like Goldilocks with this event, I’ve tried a lot of relays, but this one is just right for me. The course is challenging and the people are amazing. You will make new friends at Gorgeous Relay and not just teammates; the participants are just pure fun. The post-race celebration is like a block party with all of your best running friends. There’s beer for those old enough and a food cart, typical Portland scene. I don’t typically get excited about medals, but I’m like a kid at Christmas waiting for my Gorgeous Relay bling. They are always creative and unique, just like the event itself. Best of all, you get to sleep in your own bed when you’re done.
