Race Preview: The Inferno 2016

Are you ready for The Inferno? This obstacle course race (OCR) will once again be challenging participants in Salem on September 10. This event includes 3 distance options: a 13.1 mile, a 6 mile, and a 3-4 mile course. The 13.1 mile course includes 30+ obstacles and distance swim. The 6 mile course has 20+ obstacles and a distance swim, while the 3-4 mile has 15+ obstacles. If you love a good physical challenge but hate the mud, this OCR is for you. No mud pits or mud crawls. It’s all about the obstacles.

This race is billed as an “Extreme Obstacle Challenge,” so expect a tough one. While the obstacles are not specifically listed, past photos show things like wall climbs, a rope crawl, tire pulls, heavy lifting and dragging, monkey bars, various other obstacles to traverse, and plenty of running – of course. Unlike many other OCRs, the two longer distances include a 200 meter swim. Now that sounds refreshing during a warm summer obstacle course race! If you are concerned about the swim, there are life vests available and life guards on staff. Inferno does state that you may choose to skip the swim or any other obstacle that you do not feel you can complete safely. However, you will not be eligible for awards if you skip obstacles.

After your extreme challenge, enjoy a free post-race beer (21 and over only), live music, race awards, and there will be food and beverages available for purchase.

The Inferno is partnered with Action For Healthy Kids, working to help end childhood obesity. They hope that your participation will inspire others and encourage kids to be active and healthy.

I have to say, that just doing the research for this preview is making me so bummed that I can’t participate in this event. It sounds like so much fun and a great challenge. I hope that some of you will participate and that someone will do a write up about their adventure and submit it as a guest post for Run Oregon. I want to enjoy it vicariously through you! I will definitely get this one on my calendar for next year.
