Race Preview: 2016 Ralph Painter Memorial 5K and 10K Kids’ Race

Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter

Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter was murdered on January 5, 2011 while investigating a report about a man’s suspicious behavior in an audio equipment store. Because of Chief Painter’s long history of running (dating back to high school), it’s appropriate that one of the memorials dedicated to him is a 5K and 10K race in his name: the Ralph Painter Memorial 5K and 10K Kids’ Race. It’s open to adults as well as kids, but there is a race fee discount for runners under age 18. Proceeds from the race will fund scholarships for “deserving high school seniors in Columbia County.”

The race takes place on July 23, 2016, starting at Rainier High School. The 10K is not two loops of the 5K course, but rather adds a separate trail run through woods. The course can be seen here.

Race perks include:

  • Law enforcement personnel running in full gear
  • Finisher’s medals
  • Pre- and post-race food and drinks, including pancakes
  • Dance performance
  • Raffle tickets
  • Timing by Uberthons
