The Fourth of July this year occurs on a Monday – and that means, if you are crazy like me, you can sign up for races on Saturday, Sunday AND Monday! I love it when the holiday falls on a weekday like this, purely for this reason. Call me addicted.
This year will be the very first year I will be participating in the Aquafina Butte to Butte event, which is a longstanding (43rd annual this year), insanely popular (in a good way) Fourth of July Event that takes place in Eugene, Oregon. It is highly competitive, but also perfectly suited for non-competitive runners, as well.
You may choose from the 10K, 5K or 4-mile Mayor’s Walk. There is an option for everyone in the family to get out a celebrate Independence Day! Important to note, new this year, the course has been slightly modified so that participants do not have to cross any railroad tracks – always a wonderful change! The new finish line for all events will be at the 5th Street Market.
In just a second I’ll go into details about the three distances and their respective courses. But here are some of the race logistics and other information about the event that is important to relay. The Aquafina Butte to Butte is an Oregon Track Club (OTC) event and fundraiser, with all profits going to support OTC programs, including maintenance of Pre’s Trail and summer all-comers’ meets for kids. I am a member of Oregon Track Club and can personally say it is an amazing running and walking club that does so much good for the running/walking community. A generous prize purse will be up for grabs in the 10K and 5K events. There will be an Alumni Challenge for participants in the 10K event (just include your high-school of graduation on the entry), and a team competition (male, female, or coed) with the first five finishers on the team having their times added for the total team time. Prizes will be awarded to top teams. This year’s shirt design is new, and gorgeous! Age group medals will be awarded for top places in the 10K and 5K events.
Now for some details on the distances, and subsequent courses, you may choose to register for. The 5K run/walk begins at 7:45 a.m. The 5K starts and finishes at 5th Street Public Market. This is an out and back style course, which will proceed south on High Street to 24th Avenue, and proceed back north on High Street to the finish line.
The 10K run/walk kicks-off at 8 a.m. This is a point-to-point race, so you need to get parked and catch a shuttle from the finish line to the start line. Shuttles will depart every 5 minutes from the bus stop at the corner of 5th Avenue and Pearl Street. The first shuttle begins at 6:30 a.m., and the last shuttle departs at 7:30 a.m. The 10K starts near Spencer Butte Middle School, proceeding along Donald Street and Fox Hollow to West Amazon. The Donald Street/Fox Hollow hill is famous among this event – and includes it’s own prize purse for the fastest uphill and downhill. You’ll then proceed along Amazon Parkway to High Street, which will lead you to the finish line at 5th Street Public Market.
The 4-mile Mayor’s Walk hits the streets at 8:30 a.m. Participants will need to catch a shuttle from the finish line for the Mayor’s Walk. This shuttle will depart from the bus stop at 4th and Mill Street from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. The shuttle will drop participants off at the start, which is at Spencer Butte Middle School. Walkers will bypass the major hill, for a smooth cruise along Amazon Parkway to High Street, then swing into the finish line at 5th Street Public Market.
Stick around at the new finish line for the post-race party, which includes refreshments, live music, and food specials from the 5th Street Public Market Food Court vendors.
