Race Preview: 17th Annual Helvetia Half and 10K (June 11, 2016)

.

When I ran Helvetia Half in 2014, the course meandered from the Ron Tonkin field (or also known as the Hillsboro Stadium) through picturesque farmlands, past the famous Helvetia Tavern (which will later reward participants at the finish line with one of their amazing burgers) and through some amazing roads completely blanketed by shade from the surrounding tall trees.  From city to country to forest, this hilly course has it all and this quickly became one of my favorite half marathons.  The slogan "Leave The City Behind" perfectly captures the essence of this event. Beyond the beauty and breathtaking views, participants this year can expect:
  • Chip timed race (except for kids' dash)
  • World Famous Helvetia Burger (meat or vegetarian)
  • One free Full Sail beer or Barefoot Wine & Bubbly (bring your ID)
  • finisher's medal
  • tech race shirt
  • live music
  • chance for prizes and giveaways
  • awards for the top 3 male and female  finishers as well as top three in age catergories
  • costume contest awards for best cowboy/ cowgirl/ farmer

The course this year hasn’t changed much (if at all) when I had enjoyed it, so hopefully you will enjoy it too!   Though the hills can be a fun challenge, there is plenty of support on the course with cheerful volunteers at the water stations and porta potties located at miles 1.1, 2.3, 3.7, 4.8, 5.8, 7.3, 8.5, 10.1 and 11.6. (Water and electrolytes will be on the course.)

The area can be quite congested and the website recommends participants arrive by 6:30 am for a stress-free race morning.

Packet pickup is available in two locations prior to race day to also help ease any race day stress.  On Thursday, June 9th, head over to Portland Running Company ( 800 SE Grant Ave. Portland) from  10:00 am until 7:00 pm.  If that time doesn’t work for you, head over on Friday, June 10th, to Carr Chevrolet (15005 SW TV Hwy, Beaverton) from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.

About Robin York (146 Articles)
Robin grew up as a couch potato and did everything she could to get out of exercise, until one day a good friend would not stop talking about this fun 5k race she was doing. Finally Robin got off the couch and trained for this "fun" race using C25K (couch to 5k program). After crossing that first finish line, she kept going and became a "runner". After losing 80 lbs, gaining health, a love of being active and setting a healthy example for her husband and kids, she thinks she'll stick with this whole "running thing".
