When I ran Helvetia Half in 2014, the course meandered from the Ron Tonkin field (or also known as the Hillsboro Stadium) through picturesque farmlands, past the famous Helvetia Tavern (which will later reward participants at the finish line with one of their amazing burgers) and through some amazing roads completely blanketed by shade from the surrounding tall trees. From city to country to forest, this hilly course has it all and this quickly became one of my favorite half marathons. The slogan “Leave The City Behind” perfectly captures the essence of this event.
Beyond the beauty and breathtaking views, participants this year can expect:
- Chip timed race (except for kids’ dash)
- World Famous Helvetia Burger (meat or vegetarian)
- One free Full Sail beer or Barefoot Wine & Bubbly (bring your ID)
- finisher’s medal
- tech race shirt
- live music
- chance for prizes and giveaways
- awards for the top 3 male and female finishers as well as top three in age catergories
- costume contest awards for best cowboy/ cowgirl/ farmer
The course this year hasn’t changed much (if at all) when I had enjoyed it, so hopefully you will enjoy it too! Though the hills can be a fun challenge, there is plenty of support on the course with cheerful volunteers at the water stations and porta potties located at miles 1.1, 2.3, 3.7, 4.8, 5.8, 7.3, 8.5, 10.1 and 11.6. (Water and electrolytes will be on the course.)
The area can be quite congested and the website recommends participants arrive by 6:30 am for a stress-free race morning.
