Why do ultramarathons always get the best courses?! Why can’t 5Ks run on serene trails through dense old-growth forest, along rivers, past snow-peaked mountains, and misty waterfalls? OK, there are a few shorter races like this, but in general, ultra runners really are spoiled when it comes to scenic and wild trail races.
A prime example is coming up on Saturday, June 11th, in the Umpqua National Forest in Douglas County, east of Roseburg. The NUT 100K & 50K is not named for the type of character who runs rugged trail ultras, but is actually an acronym for the North Umpqua Trail.
Both races, hosted by Go Beyond Racing, are point-to-point courses along the North Umpqua River, and combine amazing scenery with challenging trails. The 100K starts at the Susan Creek Day Area, while the 50K begins at the midway point of the 100K, near the Masters Bridge. Both races finish at Lemolo Lake resort.
Runners receive a finisher’s pint glass, post-race barbecue, and a shuttle to the start. Aid stations will have bountiful provisions. Two types of shirt are available for an additional fee, tech or soft non-tech, a nice option that more events should offer.
The top three men and women and the top masters will win prizes, including a limited edition sample of Trail Butter. Age group winners will earn an engraved pint glass. Everyone will also have a chance to win a variety of raffle prizes. The NUT races are also part of the Northwest Mountain Trail Series and the Trail Runner Trophy Series.
I can definitely see the appeal of trail ultras, even if they are often 10 to 20 times too long. Sometimes you feel like a NUT, sometimes you don’t.

What time: The 100K starts at 6:00a, the 50K starts at 9:00a. Packet pickup will begin at the start of each race one hour before the start.
Registration: The 100K is $200 through June 8th and $220 day-of-race; The 50K is $110 through June 8th and $120 day of race. You can register online HERE.
