Race Preview: 2016 Newport Marathon and Half Marathon on June 4th

The Newport Marathon and Half Marathon takes advantage of our gorgeous central Oregon coastline, is a certified Boston qualifying marathon and raises money for athletics in Newport. This marathon is flat, fast and fun. Held on June 4th, the marathon and half marathon begin at Yaquina Bay State Park. The town boasts that it’s known to be ‘the friendliest,’ though I’m not sure how scientific that is or how exactly that title is determined, but I do know that the course is extremely flat and pretty.

It starts near the historic ‘haunted’ lighthouse in Yaquina Bay State Park (just west of Highway 101 at the mouth of the bay) and travels north along the ocean with a short loop through Newport neighborhoods. There are views of the magnificent Yaquina Bay Bridge, the bay front and ocean pretty much the entire 26.2 miles so you have plenty of scenery for distraction. Aid stations will be offered every two miles along the course with water and CLIF SHOT electrolytes. There will be designated fruit and gel aid stations along the course and the ‘Oyster Shooters’ at miles 11 and 19. Oregon Oyster Farms offers their world famous ‘shooters’ for brave participants. The record to date is 80 oysters during the marathon.

It’s easy to see why this event fills up with the beautiful, scenic course and friendly coastal town atmosphere. It’s mostly flat with a few minor rollers and a great place to aim for a personal record or earn a Boston qualifying time. Herb Phillips of Burnaby B.C., Canada broke the World Record for 63 year old males in 2004 at the Newport Marathon with a time of 2:47:28. The marathon begins at 7:00 am and costs $110 through June 1st or until it’s full. The marathon walk is also $110 and begins at 6:00 am. The half marathon begins at 7:45 am and is already full. There is no day-of packet pick up, so athletes must pick up their race packets on June 3rd from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Race Headquarters in Embarcadero Resort Hotel. Pick up tickets for the pasta dinner at the expo for $9 per person (kids 11 and under are $4). The pasta dinner will be held at Newport High School and includes pasta with marinara sauce, salad, bread and beverages.

There will be plenty of food at the finish line as well for all participants to re-fuel. Showers are available from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm at Newport High School for $2. Awards will be presented at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club (750 SE Bay Blvd) at 2:30 pm. A flat and fast course, plus a little getaway, it’s pretty obvious to see why the Newport Marathon is so popular.
