The 4th annual Horse Lake Trail Runs in the Wenatchee, Washington foothills returns on May 1.  In addition to the half marathon and 5 mile events, a 12K course will debut this year. Held on the 1,700 acre Horse Lake Reserve, known for its wildflowers and amazing views, this race promises to be both challenging and scenic. This event is a fundraiser for the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust with proceeds going towards trail construction and maintenance at Horse Lake Reserve.

The race is run on nicely graded single and double track trails. The half marathon course incorporates the Apricot Crisp Trail System and old ranch roads, making for a challenging course overall. The trails will provide views of the North Cascades, Wenatchee River Valley, and the Columbia River Valley. Wildflowers, including balsam root and lupine will most likely be blooming this time of year, making for an amazing setting for a trail run.

All distances will start at the Horse Lake Reserve Trailhead. Course and elevation maps for each distance can be found here. Parking is limited, so racers are encouraged to carpool or use the shuttles available at the WalMart parking lot. Aid stations will be available, but you may want to bring additional hydration, as springtime temperatures can be quite warm.

Participants will receive a unique finisher’s medal and a year membership to Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. Food and beverages will be available at the finish area for racers. Race bibs are good for a beverage discount at Saddle Rock Pub & Brewery after the race. The top male and female finishers in each race will receive awards. And division winners will receive jam made from apricots harvested from old trees on Horse Lake property. Yum!

I will be running this event for the first time this year. After looking at the elevation map of the 5 mile course, I have to admit, I’m a bit nervous. But, I am looking forward to enjoying the great trails and scenery this event promises. I love running in the Wenatchee area and have found that Run Wenatchee puts on a great race, so I expect it to be a positive experience.
