Race Preview: 2016 Pear Blossom Run

With its classic 10 mile race, along with a 5k, and a 2 mile or 1 mile Mayor's Cup fun run, the annual Pear Blossom Run is back at it again, celebrating its 40th anniversary. The annual event is set to take place Saturday, April 9, and again will kickoff the Pear Blossom Festival, featuring a parade and many other family friendly activities.The Pear Blossom Run is quite a big staple to the Medford area, attracting a large racing field with some especially speedy runners. Regardless of how fast you are though, the race is sure to offer a good time for everyone.

Day of race events are as follows:

7:00am 5k Race begins

7:50am Mayor’s Cup 1 Mile Race begins

8:10am 10 Mile Handcycle/Wheelchair Race begins

8:20am 10 Mile Race begins

8:30am Mayor’s Cup 2 Mile Race begins

5k Race Info:

The race will be chip timed and feature a USAT&F certified course that is listed as a flat, fast, out and back within Medford city limits. The time limit for the 5k is 60 minutes, which is a 19:18 mile pace. Animals, skateboards, bikes, skates, or other wheeled devices are not permitted. Wheelchairs and baby strollers are allowed but are asked to please line up at the back. Awards will be given to the first male and first female finishers who will receive a $100 gift certificate each. No awards for walkers.

10 Mile Race Info:

The race will be chip timed and feature a USAT&F certified course that is listed as a flat, fast, out and back with one hill. The time limit for the 10 Mile race is 2:40, which is a 16:00 mile pace. Animals, skateboards, bikes, skates, or other wheeled devices not permitted. Baby strollers are also  not allowed in the 10 Mile event. A special handcrank/trackchair/wheelchair division is offered. Water stations will be available every 2.5 miles or less. Awards will be given to the first male and first female finisher who will each receive a $250 gift certificate. No awards for walkers.

Mayor’s Cup Fun Run Info:

Participants can choose to participate in the 1 mile race, the 2 mile race or both races with the same bib. The course is flat, out and back within Medford city limits. Again, animals, skateboards, bikes, skates, or other wheeled devices not permitted, but wheelchairs and baby strollers are allowed.

Registration can be found here, and if completed by April 2nd, will offer a $10 savings for both the 10 mile race ($26) and the 5k race ($20). Pear Run shirts are also available for purchase for $12 and Mayor’s Cup Fun Run shirts are also available for $8. These can be purchased at packet pick up depending on availability.

Packet pickup will take place Friday, April 8 at the Rogue Valley Family YMCA, 522 West Sixth Street, Medford, OR 97501. It will be open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Friday and then on Saturday beginning at 6:00 am. It is strongly encouraged that race participants get their packets on Friday if possible.

It’s easy to see why the Pear Blossom Run flourishes every year. This year, the race celebrates its 40th anniversary with special anniversary medals for all 5K and 10 Mile finishers and ribbons for all Fun Run finishers. Over 200 random drawing prizes will also be given out. Additionally, you will want to stick around after the race for the YMCA open house and pancake feed, which will run from 8:00am to 10:00am. This will then be followed up by the always eventful, Pear Blossom Parade.
