Race Preview: 2016 Owyhee Off-Road Challenge

The 2nd annual Owyhee Off-Road Challenge will be held on March 26 in Adrian, Oregon. Adrian is a small town about an hour outside of Boise, ID.  This event is a fundraiser for the Adrian School District track program. Their track is not standard size or shape and is made out of dirt. Track athletes at this school currently have to practice at other schools after the other school teams have finished practice. Improving a small school track is certainly a cause I can get behind!

The Owyhee Off-Road Challenge includes a 5K, 10K, and a half marathon. The half marathon course starts out on pavement, then goes off road and uphill, climbing over 700 feet. There will be many ups and downs, but participants will enjoy sweeping views of the Treasure Valley and the Owyhee River Valley. The course even includes a sandy climb known as Swear Hill. Fortunately, after a lot of climbing, you will be rewarded with a downhill to the finish. The total elevation gain of the half marathon is 1740 feet.

The 10K is a loop course with a total elevation gain of 846 feet. This course also includes spectacular views of the surrounding valleys.  The 5K is an out and back course with an elevation gain of just 300 feet. All distances promise challenging climbs and great views. All events are open to both walkers and runners, but be aware that the half-marathon has a time limit of 4 hours.

All participants will receive a long sleeve tech shirt and a finisher’s medal. Awards will be given out to the top 3 males and females for each distance. This event is chip-timed and USATF sanctioned. It is also a part of the Oregon Half and Full Marathon Series.

This challenging off-road race that supports a great cause is an event that will be well worth the drive and your efforts. Gather some friends and help the Adrian School track team get a real track!
