Race Preview: Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk for Arthritis

It’s officially November, which of course means people are already pouring the eggnog, blasting the Christmas tunes, and keeping track of how many sleeps left until Christmas morning. If you just so happen to be that type of person but also have a love for running, you’re in luck, because with the holiday’s in full swing come a variety of holiday themed races to choose from. One such race happens to be one of the biggest fun runs in the nation, aimed at raising funds for arthritis research. The Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk for Arthritis will take place on Sunday, December 6 in Portland (one of the two Oregon race locations).

The Jingle Bell Run/Walk supports the Arthritis Foundation with races taking place in almost every state in the United States. Participants can take part by either running or walking individually or as a team, or by simply donating towards the cause. The Jingle Bell Run/Walk mission video does a great job of exemplifying the role of the Arthritis Foundation and the goals behind the Run/Walk race series.

For those who want to make the race day a family affair, there will be a 5K run/walk for kids 12 and under as well as a 1K kids fun run for ages 10 and under. The start and finish will take place on Salmon Street in Downtown Portland and the course will be an out and back with views of the Willamette along the Waterfront. Course map and course elevation information can be found here.

All participants are highly encouraged to don their best holiday costumes and ugly sweaters. Awards will be given out to the best adult and youth costume, the best ugly holiday sweater, and the best jingler. If you’re planning on participating in the costume contest you will want to make sure to check in at the stage before 8AM. The kids 1K will begin at the conclusion of the costume contest at 8:30AM. The 5K run/walk is scheduled to begin at 8:50AM where a “hold and release” system will be employed to start the event ensuring that participants are spaced out on the course. If you pay for chip timing, your time will start when you cross the timing mat at the start line.

Registration for all participants includes a long sleeve t-shirt and jingle bells. Price to register is $35 for the 5K run/walk, $25 for the Kids 5K run/walk, and $20 for the 1K Kids Fun Run. If you’re wanting to register for the race individually or as part of a team but are not able to physically make it out on race day, you also have the “Jingle in your jammies” option for $25. Those who choose this option will still receive a race shirt and jingle bells and can get these items at packet pick up, from a team member, or have it shipped to your home for an additional $6.

So far the Portland Donation page for the Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5K indicates that they have raised more than $77,000 while the race series itself has raised more than $3,000,000. If you’re looking for an excuse to wear that ugly sweater you have hidden in your closet while also spreading some holiday cheer, I would highly recommend the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis.
