Out-of-area race preview: 2015 Des Moines Turkey Trot (Iowa)

Trot DSM

Over the past week, the bloggers here at RunOregon have been busy finding and previewing Thanksgiving races in the area. I myself researched at least four and was intrigued by several other, so it was with mixed feelings that I booked plane tickets to visit family in the Midwest for the week. Shortly after the flight confirmation came through, I was on RunningInTheUSA.com to see if there's a race close to my destination that I could sign up for, and twelve hours later, my sister-in-law had signed us both up for the Des Moines Turkey Trot, which will be my first run in Iowa's Capital.

This Turkey Trot offers their participants the choice between a 5k and a 5-mile run or walk. Registration cost is low ($22 until November 1st) and includes the chip-timed race, a beanie hat, and pancake breakfast. Long sleeve, gender-specific event shirts are available for an additional $8. The Tot Trot is a 200m run for kids ages 6 and under, and for $7 your child will get a race bib and finisher’s medal.

I am very much looking forward to this new-to me “scenic urban” course. Runners start near the courthouse, cross the Des Moines River (I love bridges!!), and head through the East Village towards the Capitol Building, where we will run past all buildings of the Capitol complex. We then head back towards the west again, where 5k runners retrace their steps towards the finish, and 5-mile runners run a detour to the north, crossing a different bridge before heading south along the river towards the finish line.

After the race, participants will be treated to a pancake breakfast provided by Chris Cakes. Spectators can buy a breakfast tickets for $5. At 11am, the breakfast will close to participants and reopen at 11:30am for a community brunch open to all in need of community (and hot pancakes) this holiday season.
