2015 Painted Hills Half Marathon, 10k and 5k Registration Form

The Painted Hills Half, a low-cost, low-key half marathon (there is also a 10k and a 5k) is a must-do for every Oregon runner. It's only $15, and just a short drive from the Bend/Redmond/Prineville area, so it's easy to turn into a fun Labor Day weekend.Organized for years by the very personable Tom and Mary Fitzgerald, the Painted Hills Half is part of the Painted Hills Festival, a fun small-town community event with a parade, vendors, and an impressive quilt show. The run is a point-to-point, so runners and walkers all load onto the bus which leaves downtown Mitchell at 8a sharp. Drop bags are simply left on the bus and picked up at the finish line. Half-marathoners are dropped off; the bus waits until they all start at 8:30a, and then drives to the 10k start line. Those running or walking 6.2 get off the bus there and start at 9a; and then the bus takes the 5k participants 3.1 miles down the road for their 9:15a start.

I had planned on running the half marathon back in 2011, but was about two months pregnant and sidelined by nausea, so I backed off and just did the 5k. I still want to do the half someday, but even the 5k was worth the trip. Keep in mind that there isn’t much shade on the route and it can get pretty toasty in that part of Oregon in early September, but it’s a beautiful run without any of the hype that’s easy to find at races nowadays.

Stick around for the awards ceremony at 11a in City Park. Age group and overall award winners receive medals, and there’s plenty of fun things to do (and delicious food to eat).

Here are the vitals:

About Kelly Barten (1152 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.

  1. Hi Kelly,

Can you tell me a little more information about the course? How hilly it is? I am debating btw the 10k and half. Thanks!

  2. I advise to watch a documentary about Painted Hills in 4K quality https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX-dkS2gV3w

  3. That photo at the top is not the Painted Hills. It is Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park.
