Race Preview: 2015 Foot Traffic Flat Half and Full Marathon – July 4th, 2015

Foot Traffic Flat 2015

The 4th of July is right around the corner (can you believe it?) and for the first time in years I can't wait for it to get here!  I feel like a kid waiting for their birthday!  Why?  Because I will be running the famed Foot Traffic Flat  on Sauvie Island!  I have heard fantastic things about this race and I'm so excited I get to experience it myself!  The Foot Traffic crew puts on a fabulous race that includes the Full and Half Marathon distances, as well as an 8k and a 5k.  There is something for everyone at what is becoming one of Portland's favorite 4th of July traditions!

The ‘Flat’ as it is affectionately called, is touted as one of the flattest and fastest courses on the West Coast… That in itself is a draw, (especially because lately all the races I seem to be running have ‘gently rolling hills’… which we all know, is never the case!!)… Here are some other reasons to run this event…

  • Run on the beautiful and picturesque Sauvie Island – with its scenic views, wildlife, charming farmland, majestic bald eagles, quaint homes, and friendly residents, just 15 minutes North of Portland.
  • The Full Marathon is a Boston Qualifier… remember… flat and fast…
  • Strawberry shortcake…. enough said

    Gigantic 2015 Finishers Medal

  • Awesome bling!
  • Random awards given at the finish line as runner cross the finish line, seriously?  That’s cool!
  • Great food and live music compliments of the Pumpkin Patch
  • Proceeds benefit the Sauvie Island Fire District
  • Did I mention the strawberry shortcake???

Registration: Today you can register for the Half for $72 which includes a gender specific soft-hand cotton shirt and the finishers medal.  The Full is $90 with the same great swag.  There is still time to register online here and there is also Race Day Registration offered for a minor additional cost.

Packet Pick-up: Foot Traffic provides athletes with several convenient places and times for packet pickup.  You can access the schedule here.

Sauvie Island’s new bridge!

Transportation:  Traffic can be a little tricky on race day, especially on an island.  Athletes and spectators alike can take the shuttle for the low-cost of $9.00 a person.  Shuttle tickets can be purchased up through June 20th here.  If you drive, carpooling is encouraged and allow yourself plenty of time to find parking and make your way to the start line.  If you have family and friends joining you, take note that once the race begins driving on the island is not allowed.  Spectators are allowed to and even encouraged to bring their bikes or rent bikes to ride around the island during the race!  What a fun way to watch loved ones race!  Bike rentals are provided by Fat Tire Farm.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Our Country’s Birthday… So grab your favorite red, white, and blue garb and meet me at the start line… afterwards, we can toast our accomplishments with… strawberry shortcake of course!!  See you there!
