Small Race Preview: Stayton Fun Run – Old Time 4th Of July Fun Run/Walk

Oregon is chock full of running events on Independence Day. One of the longest running is the 32nd annual Stayton Fun Run. The 10k, 5k, and 3k courses all start just prior to Stayton's 4th of July Festival. From the website:

This event began as the Blue Grass Run in 1983. It was part of Stayton’s former Blue Grass Festival. With the demise of the festival, the runs and walks shifted to a 4th of July event in 1989. Among the organizations which have benefited from the runs and walks include the Lion’s Club SightFirst Program, AFS Intercultural Programs and the Kidney Foundation. Stayton Road Runners Club, a loose knit community organization which has promoted fitness and organized events in the Stayton area for 30 years has been in charge of the Fun Run since it inception.  In 2013 the Road Runners invited the local Scout Troop 50 into the administrative and work details of the race. In helping out at the race, Stayton’s Troop 50 would now be the new beneficiary. This was a great partnership for 2013 ~ between the Willamette Valley Roadrunners and the Stayton Troop 50, a new energy and excitement has been brought to this 4th of July tradition.

32 years? Awesome!

There are once again three distances for people of any short-mid level distance and speed runners to enjoy.

The 10k run is both an out-and-back, and a loop. Runners will head north and run along the Frontage road near Highway 22, before returning and looping around Washington and Ida Streets.  The 5k Trail Run will feature a short part on city streets before hitting the Scout trail that runs along the Santiam River. The 3k distance will feature solely the loop portion of the 10k.

Given the inexpensive nature of the race (only $10 til 6/26 and $15 after that), don’t expect anything fancy – just a fun run that can provide a new course for the competitive runner and also for those just wanting to get out there and be active on the 4th of July.

Stick around afterwards for the Stayton Parade and Independence Day festival. As part of the festivities, there will be a pancake breakfast (INCLUDED in race fee!), parades, concerts, variety shows, games for the kids, food booths, and fireworks. Come for the run and stay for the fun!

Shirts can be purchased for extra. All proceeds are donated to the Stayton Scout Troop 50.
