Race preview: 2015 Run On The Runway 5K

The 2nd Annual Run On The Runway 5K, part of the Intel Oregon International Air Show festivities, will touch down on Sunday, July 19th on the runways and taxiways of the Hillsboro Airport. I missed this race last year, so I will be flying blind with my preview, but I will wing it based on the excellent information provided at

Much as the downtown Portland races allow you to run on major streets closed to auto traffic, this unique event is the only chance you’ll get to run on the airport tarmac. The race is a fundraiser for the Hillsboro Schools Foundation, and is limited to 500 runners aged 14 and older.

The course, of course, is extremely flat and fast, and will take runners on a tour of Runways 31 East and 20, as well as several taxiways. The course should be well-marked, so put yourself on autopilot and go for a PR!

However, if you’re thinking of barnstorming and going off course, cool your jets! Because flight attendants… er, volunteers will be checking for unusual flight patterns, and will remove any runners who wander into restricted air space… um, off route.

In addition, lost luggage, in the form of litter, is strictly prohibited, as it poses a danger to planes. Use the provided trash cans or give any loose items to a volunteer.

Also, dog will NOT be your copilot at this event: “Due to the time and safety restrictions no walkers, strollers, skateboards, rollerblades, bikes, weapons, glass, or pets will be allowed on the course.”
