Race Preview: 2015 Salem Summer Solstice 5/10k

One of my favorite yearly races each June is the Salem Summer Solstice 10k and 5k, held in Minto Brown Park. This race is put on by the Willamette Valley Road Runners, and is a low-key event that focuses on running and ice cream!

The race begins at 7pm and has two distances to choose from – a 10k and 5k. All distances start at the same location on the paved trails near the main Picnic Shelter. I noticed this year that the distances have different start times – the 10k at 7pm and the 5k at 710pm. This is a FANTASTIC change, as previous years have seen major path clogging as the 5k consists of a very quick out and back that always causes a bit of chaos.

Minto Brown Park (home of the famous Owl Capone!) has a TON of great trails to run on – both paved and bark. The 5k will be held entirely on paved trails and features a nice stretch along the banks of the Willamette River. The 10k will feature that same stretch, but will head further into the park. Historically, this has included some bark trails, but a recent facelift may have paved the ones utilized for this distance.

After the race, there is a giant ice cream bar with sundaes to be created and sweet tooths to be cured. Ice Cream is free for runners with registration and only $2 for those who aren’t. Needless to say, this is a race my kids LOVE to attend with me. And as a result, strollers are welcome.

The race benefits the McKay High School Cross Country Team.
