Race Preview: First Responder 5k

If you or a family member have ever had an emergency, chances are you were helped by one of countless first responders, who could be anyone from a paid Fire-Fighter or Paramedic, to a Red Cross volunteer. Having worked in Emergency Medicine myself for many years, I speak from experience when I say that many of these careers are thank-less jobs…and that is just fine with them. Each of the Police Officers, National Guard,  EMT’s, Firefighters and other first responders may have different reasons that originally drew them to their career, but the overwhelming reason they all stay is from the pure joy of helping a neighbor or complete stranger in their most desperate time of need. They ask for no thanks, no recognition, and know that even though you likely will never remember their names or faces again, you WILL remember the kindness and care they took in your most desperate hour of need.

They will never ask for praise or recognition, but isn’t it time we showed them some anyway?

The Second Annual First Responder 5k is a great way to show your appreciation for these shadow heros! The event is a walk or run event, so regardless of your fitness level, you are welcome to attend. Many of the local  Fire Fighters, Police Officers, Red Cross Volunteers, Armed Forces, EMTs, Paramedics, etc. will be in attendance, so you will have an opportunity to see their faces, get to know their names, and thank them for being protectors in your communities. Pets and strollers are welcome on the course, as well as kids under 13 are free, so make a family event out of it and show your support.

Did I mention that 100% of the proceeds go directly to the local American Red Cross? 🙂

The parks paved pathways are a mostly flat 3.1 mile loop course with portions along the river. The course will be well marked. The event will begin with Registration at 8:00AM with the Race start time at 9:00AM.”

After you’ve finished, check out the post-race fun at Awareness Village, where snacks, drinks, giveaways, safety information, as well as sponsor booths will keep awareness and festivities going!
