I’ve run my fair share of relays and can’t think of a single one that I haven’t liked, but I definitely have a favorite. I know moms aren’t supposed to have favorite kids and I’m assuming the same rule applies for Run Oregon Bloggers. I’m probably not supposed to have a favorite, but I can’t help it, the Gorgeous Relay remains my favorite relay. It might be that the course is breathtaking from the Gorge to Portland, it might be that the race directors are pretty much the best guys on the planet or it might be that my teammate makes it special. It’s probably a combination of all of the above with a few more things thrown in. Regardless, the Gorgeous Relay is now an annual tradition for me and I mark the calendar with Sharpie as soon as the date is announced.
Registration opens TODAY at 12 PM and there are only 100 spots available, so teams can’t procrastinate. The relay will start with waves on Sunday, September 20th. This run takes advantage of our Northwest beauty with sections along the Historic Columbia Highway, views of the Columbia River, Willamette River and my favorite, the Historic Vista House at Crown Point. There’s a reason this race has filled up every year. The course it pretty, they give away unique swag and it’s only one day, so the commitment is minimal.
On September 20th, teams of 1-6 runners start in Wyeth, 51 miles from Portland and just east of Cascade Locks. With 12 legs, teams make their way through the Gorge, Troutdale, the Fairview-Gresham Trail, along the Springwater Trail and finish up at Base Camp Brewery in Portland. With only one van running for one day, it makes planning easy and you don’t have the stress of the other weekend relays. Stress-free planning, you run for the day and get to sleep in your own bed that night- there’s a reason I’m in love with this event.
The following prices are good through June 15th:
Regular Team (5-6 Runners ) $480
Extra Credit Team (3-4 Runners) $320
Dynamic Duo Team (2 Runners) $160
Hard Core (Individual Runner) $80
It basically breaks down to about $80 per person and prices will increase on June 16th, if spots are still available. This would be a great family race, a unique way to bond with people at work or just a chance to catch up with friends. The relay is a blast, the party at the finish line is just that and no worrying about a hotel or long drive home when you are done. If you’ve ever considered a relay, but didn’t want to commit to a whole weekend, try the Gorgeous Relay. I know I’m biased, but it really is the best. Don’t miss out, get some friends together and sign up.
