Race preview: 2015 Moon Tree Run 5k/10k

Ever wanted to train like a Siskiyou Smokejumper by running their same cross-country routes? Now is your chance! Come join in the Moon Tree Run tradition, which was founded in 1979 by Dale O’Keefe. The run commemorates the 1971 Apollo 14 Moon landing and the pilot of the mission, Stuart Roosa, who was also a Siskiyou Smokejumper. During his mission, he carried Douglas Fir tree seeds with him and planted them on earth upon his return. And the Moon Tree was born!

The Moon Tree Run will take place on Saturday, July 6th at 9 a.m. at the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base and IV Airport, 4.5 miles south of Cave Junction. The Moon Tree Run offers a IV Volunteer Firefighter’s Breakfast, a POW/MIA ceremony, 5k and 10 runs, free 2k kid’s fun run (register by 9 a.m.), awards, Smokejumper Base tours, and the Moon Tree History.

The course is really interesting and includes roads that go through Rough and Ready Creek alluvial fan. The run then continues through a lush and dense valley.

Register at Healthy U Center. Adults are $20 ($25 DOR) and children under 18 are $10 ($15 DOR)
