Race Preview: Corvallis Half Marathon 5k

The Corvallis Half Marathon is now in its fifth year, and this time they are adding something new: The first annual Corvallis Half Marathon 5k, which takes place during packet pickup on the day before the Half. Runners and walkers of all speeds are welcome to join the fun. To receive a shirt for this inaugural event, get your registration in before February 28th.

The race starts and ends on SW 26th St on the OSU Campus near Reser Stadium. The course is a modified out and back, starting north on 26th St, turning left to head west on Campus Way for about a mile to the turnaround point at exactly the half way point. Runners head back east on Campus Way for half a mile, turn right on 35th St, then left on Washington Way to finish at the start line on 26th St. There are no hills to speak of, and runners will be able to enjoy vistas of the OSU campus and neighboring farms.

I think it is a very fun idea to add a 5k run to the half marathon weekend, especially since half marathon participants have to pick up their packet on Saturday anyway. The 5k is a somewhat “bare bones” event (no medal, no beer), but the $30 entry fee for a chip timed race with shirt (guaranteed until Feb 28th) is a fair price. There will not be any age group awards, but awards are given to top finishers in the Open, Masters 45+, and U18 categories.
