Coach Jim’s free marathon training for Saturday, January 31, 2015

This week’s run is a 20-miler – an out-and-back that allows someone to run whatever distance they need for their training. Organized with the ORRC Vernonia Marathon and Half Marathon in mind as the goal race. The start and finish this week is at the downtown location of Road Runner Sports.

Remember that these runs are free and open to everyone. Volunteer pace group leaders will keep you on pace for your training; the paces vary each week but are usually between a 3:40 and 5:00 marathon.

After a trip through downtown Portland, the route takes in the river path at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and then crosses the river on the Hawthorne Bridge. Passing by some great opportunities for bathroom and water refills, including the N. Fremont Grand Central Bakery, the 10 mile mark will be near the University of Portland.

20 miles is an important milestone for your marathon training and one that should be taken seriously. You will enjoy the run and have more success from it if you start getting more and better quality sleep, and avoid rich and heavy foods the night before the run. Now is the time in your training to start practicing your race-day nutrition plan!

Where: Road Runner Sports at 29 NW 23rd Place

What time: The run will start at 8a, so be there by 7:45 to use the potty and find your pace group.

Distance: 20 miles

We started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. We also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support local race organizers.
