Winter Predictor 20k, 13k or 6k in Eugene, Oregon on January 11, 2015!

Okay, here is something super unique and fun. And a great way to begin setting your running goals for 2015, too. The Winter Predictor is a race where, prior to starting your run, you predict how long you think it will take you to complete it. Then, you race and see how close you are. Those closest to their predicted time win awards. So - the fastest doesn't always win the awards, right?! For those of us (like me) who are not front of the pack racers, this adds a super-cool element! This race has been occurring in Eugene for a number of years. New for 2015, this race has a new start location and time. Campbell Center will be hosting the start/finish line and packet pick-up for Winter Predictor. Campbell Center is located at 2nd and High streets in Eugene down by the Alton Baker Park multi-use path system.

Here is the low-down on all you need to know for the Winter Predictor. The race takes place on Sunday, January 11. Same day race registration and packet pick-up is available beginning at 12:45 p.m. on race day. The events official start at 2 p.m. No watches or timing devices allowed while you are racing. Remember, we are supposed to predict our time, and see how close we get. Walkers are welcome, but please note the 2.5 hour course limit to complete whichever event distance you select.

All courses will follow the Alton Baker Park multi-use paths. The 20k and 13k will cross over the Owosso and DeFazio foot bridges. The 6k distance will take participants over the Greenway and DeFazio foot bridges.

All events will be chip timed. For each race, the 25 racers who predicted their finish time the closest will receive awards. Also, awards for the top male and female finisher, as well as top 3 finishers in each age group, will receive awards. No duplicate awards, however. Everyone is eligible for random prizes, too!

This is bound to be an awesome event, that is really for all ages and speed levels. Get registered, get out there on January 11 and predict your time! So fun!

  1. I’ve wondered about these “predict your finishing time” races. Isn’t there a moral hazard problem in that it’s quite easy to predict a slower than average time, and then tailor your finish quite precisely with the benefit of a GPS watch or smartphone?
