ABC House – Highlighting the cause of the Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon

There’s one thing I know for certain… runners are good people. Just by their very nature, they’re a goofy and fun people. I see it in the costumes, I see it in the rallying we did after Boston, and I see it on the face of every contented runner. There is nothing I love more than seeing the running community band together to create some good juju in our world. Almost all of the races do great things in our communities, but for just this short moment that I have your attention I want to talk about Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon next weekend (Saturday, October 18 at 9 a.m. – Lebanon, OR.).

According to DHS in their 2013 Child Welfare Data Book, 64,503 cases of child abuse were reported in Oregon. Another fact that just blows me away: 48.7% of these cases were involving children under the age of six.

Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon is a race that benefits the ABC House that supports Benton and Linn Counties by providing a safe space in the community for children who have been abused. They provide many services such as medical examinations, forensic interviews, family advocacy, counseling and community education. ABC house sees about 350 children during the year and delves into the traumatic process with them to provide healing and advocacy.

What is truly great about this race is that 100% of the proceeds go to the ABC House so they can continue serving families in the Linn and Benton County areas. As an adult that experienced abuse as a child, I cannot tell you how important these organizations and services are to the children they reach. During a time that is highly volatile, places like ABC House provide these young community members with a reminder that there are people out in the community that care about them and that ultimately the village will do what it can to make sure they are in a safe space.

I know we are only a few days out from the race, but I strongly urge you to consider registering and taking part in all the fun. Check out Maryalicia’s preview as well as Jessica’s for more about the fun! If you are unable to make it out to Lebanon, you might consider the virtual runner registration option, which is only $45. If neither of those sounds good to you – it is worth just donating to this wonderful organization and supporting their good work!

I will be there running the half and celebrating my birthday, so be sure to say hi!!
