Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon 10/18/2014

There is still time to register for the 2014 Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon, occurring on Saturday, October 18! Are you not already registered for this race? Well, you should be. Let me take a moment of your time to tell you why the Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon is a perfect half marathon. Location/Logistics: The race begins at Cheadle Lake Park, which is located in Lebanon, Oregon. It is an easy drive for the folks coming from the Vancouver/Portland area, Salem/Albany area, and us down south in the Eugene/Corvallis area, as well as lots of other places! The race starts at 9 a.m., so you don’t have to wake up at those horrible early-early hours in the morning if you need to factor in your drive to get to Cheadle Lake Park. You have plenty of time to grab that cup of Dutch Bros. to get you to the start line happy. And parking – ohhhh don’t you hate pre-race logistics like lots of traffic and parking issues? Well, this event doesn’t have any of that nonsense. Parking is super easy, as there are oodles of volunteers keeping everything perfectly under control. Of course, don’t wait till the last minute to arrive as traffic may get backed-up, but if you arrive with a little time to spare, you should be fine.

Price: This race is fantastically affordable. Have you noticed the price of some half marathons reaching triple digits? $100+ for a half marathon is nearly common place nowadays. This race is $70.00 if you register from October 8 through October 16. And this is “late” registration pricing, as the race is right around the corner on October 18. Your registration fee includes a technical event shirt until October 13, a finisher’s medal that is always super-neat and pumpkin themed, a reusable goodie bag that is full of coupons and gifts (I love this! Not a lot of races do goodies bags anymore but I just love them!), amazing aid stations and support on the course, and fantastic post-race nourishment. I hope the cheese bar is offered this year as in past years! Yum!

Course: Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon is a chip timed event. Runners and walkers are strongly encouraged to dress up in costumes. There is a costume contest at 8:00 a.m., too, so you can put on your best costume for the contest before you run in it! That’s always nice, so your costume isn’t crazy after you finish running 13.1 miles, then go for a costume contest, right? The course follows the river along Berlin Road and goes towards Mallard Creek Golf Course to Waterloo, crosses a bridge and returns on River Road, which will get you back to the start/finish at Cheadle Lake. The course is really beautiful, with no major ascents or descents. I would call it “rolling hills” with a lot of flat stretches. Traffic monitors have been incredible in the past, so you feel safe on the roads while running. Aid stations and porta-potties are on the course, and they are stocked with incredible volunteers.

Awards: There are awards for the costume contest. Arrive in your costume race morning and head toward the main stage for judging, which takes place at 8 a.m. Photos will be taken, and then awards (!!) will be distributed at 8:30 a.m. Pumpkin costumes are super highly encouraged!, and it will look awesome with your pumpkin styled finisher medal. Also, top male and female finishers will receive $250 gift card to Lowe’s, a top finisher award and a free entry into the 2015 Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon. Youngest and oldest finishers will be recognized. And there will be awards for the top 3 finishers in male and female divisions by age group. You must be present to receive your prize.

General Information: There is a total limit of 1,500 participants, so do not delay in registering. The race is next Saturday, October 18, 2014 beginning at 9 a.m. Same day packet pick-up is available from 7 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., hooray! There is a 4.5 hour limit to complete the 13.1 course. Walkers are welcome, but please keep the course time limit in mind. Wheelchairs are allowed but there is not a specific division for these athletes. Baby joggers and strollers are allowed, but must start the race at the back of the pack. iPods or headphones are allowed but be respectful and keep the volume low so you can hear what is happening around you. Lots of aid will be available on the course as well as porta-potties. The race start line and finish line are at Weirich Drive at Cheadle Lake Park, the same place you park. Race begins promptly at 9 a.m.

I love, love, love, love this race. I PR’d at it last year, finally breaking my goal of under 2 hour 10 minute half marathon. I hope to PR again this year, and this race is just perfect for having an excellent, perfect run. I really hope to see you out there at the start line, and finish line! Please join me, get registered, and let’s go run!
