Race Preview: 2014 Detroit Lake Mud Run on October 11

As many of you know, Run Wild Adventures Silver Falls Marathon & Half sells out quickly. But RWA is so much more than just a one trick pony. Following their inaugural Santiam Half Marathon last weekend, the Detroit Lake Mud Run, held on Saturday, October 11 at Detroit Lake, is open for registration and is truly a great race.

I ran this in 2012 and had a blast! The 6 mile race takes place almost primarily on the bottom of the partially drained Detroit Lake. The race closes down the main/only major street in Detroit and is available only for runners. Runners head out of the town and experience mud, rocks, stumps, water crosssings (including up a small waterfall), trail running, and some of the greatest scenery in the area. It is truly a unique experience.

While the event is a bit of a drive, it is extremely affordable at $20 and there are camping areas as well if you desire. The race is limited to 500 participants. Proceeds from the race will beneifit the Detroit Lake local community. There will be a wonderful after party with warm soup, bread, beer, refreshments, and music. I don’t think there was an unsmiling face last year.

When: 9a
Where: Detroit Lake
Register: Online here; $20 ($25 DOR)
